Etsy Alternatives for Sellers: Where Else Can You Sell Handmade?
Many makers start on Etsy and do well there. But relying on one platform means its rule changes, fee changes and search changes can affect your income overnight. Spreading your sales across more than one place gives you a safety net.
Three kinds of alternatives
1. Other marketplaces
Marketplaces bring their own shoppers, like Etsy does. Some focus on handmade goods, some on art, some on vintage. Each has its own fees, rules and audience, so read the seller terms before you list.
2. Social selling
Instagram, Facebook, TikTok and Pinterest can all send buyers to a shop. On their own they're great for discovery, but you still need somewhere for the actual checkout.
3. Your own online store
Your own store (for example on Shopify) doesn't bring shoppers by itself, but everything about it is yours: your brand, your prices, your customer list and your rules.
A practical mix
| Channel | What it does for you |
|---|---|
| Etsy (keep it) | Steady discovery by new buyers |
| Your own store | Repeat customers, email list, full control |
| Pinterest or Instagram | Free traffic to your own store |
Things to check before you add a channel
- How you'll keep stock in sync so you don't sell one item twice
- Whether each platform's rules allow what you sell
- How much time you can spend each week on each channel
